*Modern-day political voice, cultural and legal expert, Dr. Christopher Metzler looks to inform and educate people on the actual effects and uses for the cannabis plant in a talk hosted at WeWorks’ shared workspaces located inside the MOCA Pacific Design Center.

The cannabis plant has moved from useful tool to life-destroying menace, to health aid and now has become a cash crop as many around the nation look to cash in on the legalization of medical and recreational cannabis.  Dr. Metzler has positioned himself and his practice as an expert on the subject.

Dr. Metzler obtained a Ph.D. in International Legal Philosophy from The University of Aberdeen.  A deep thinker, Dr. Metzler is the self-proclaimed ‘Catalyst in Chief’  who promotes to “Make America Nice Again” as a slogan.

This slogan adequately combines the two major philosophies behind Dr. Metzler’s movement: national politics and cannabis.

For those not understanding cannabis culture in the United States, “Nice Cream” was the weed dealing ice cream truck from early Cheech and Chong Movies, and ‘Make America Great Again is President Trump’s campaign slogan.  The blending of the two really helps illustrate how cannabis has risen to become a national issue.

The event was hosted by Black Hollywood LIVE Executive Producer and Reelz Channel Television Host Derrial Christon who peppered Dr. Metzler with questions pertaining to the laws surrounding running a cannabis business including labeling, regulations and the limitations of the existing laws.  Following the interview, Dr. Metzler too questions from the audience.

Whose decision was it to make the cannabis plant illegal?  Who are the brave souls that fought to bring it to everyone?  Do you know if you live in one of the 30 states that have legalized some form of cannabis use?  Are you in one of the 8 states that have legalized its recreational use?

If you live in a state bordering California, just drive on down to the store with the green plus sign.  Inside you will find the answers you seek in the form of cookies, oils, and a multitude of leafy green plants, all with funny names. But what is next? How do you tell one product from another and how do you know what effects these products will have on you?

With products ranging from what looks like handmade brownies, candy packages that resemble common store-bought candies and going into prescription bottles topped with eye dropper applicators, and even air filtering systems, the cannabis dispensary is often confusing for the first time users.  So many new to the cannabis scene return with horror stories from over-consuming some cannabis products. In most claims, the vague language used in the labeling was a factor in their experience.

An example would be a consumer who buys a cookie to go to the zoo with her family on vacation.  The label says 1/25th of the cookie is a serving, but we all know how to eat a big delicious cookie with chocolate frosting on it!  Soon, her family is asking what is wrong with her, and she doesn’t seem to know.

One such person has taken up the cause of righting the problems with the legalization of cannabis.  Dr. Metzler has dedicated himself to bringing cannabis to the consumer just like lettuce or an apple inside your local grocery store.  Riding the hills of Cannabis legalization in over 30 states including California, Nevada, and Oregon, Dr. Metzler’s efforts are met with skepticism in the urban markets as these areas have seen many would be cannabis entrepreneurs barred from being granted a license while simultaneously the companies that have sprouted up in every neighborhood have gone virtually unchecked warranting new restrictions that further limit the amount of cannabis plant given free as well as the content, intensity and long-term effects of the THC infused food products known as edibles.

What’s worse, the people who went to jail for selling weed to make money to feed their families, now are barred from selling it, now that it is legal.  Should they be granted leniency? Does not the legalization of an activity means that the former laws against it were wrong? Although this topic was not addressed in the talk, an upcoming bill was.

“The bill essentially will treat cannabis as an agricultural product,” claims Dr. Metzler.  “So cannabis will be the same as lettuce from the standpoint of federal law. Therefore, the Justice Department will have no jurisdiction to come in with any kind of regulation.”

The talk also revolved around the laws governing how to grow cannabis.

“What is the part that people are missing?” asks Dr. Metzler. “The science says don’t treat it with pesticides.  When you start doing that, then that completely reverts back to where we are. So that is a critical component that folks have got to understand and look at that from now, rather than later.”

“Your finding that many companies are buying up, through cryptocurrency, a number of dispensaries,” said Dr. Metzler.  “As much as Big Pharma is buying up all of this Cannabis stuff, what they are not telling you, is in fact through shell companies Big Pharma is actually in the same game.  They understand that it’s going to happen.”

“There’s an oversaturation of dispensaries and what you are going to see is regulation.  The regulation is going to be around quality control. And that’s the issue, quality control.  Allot of people who are doing it, are not doing it as they should.”

Regulation is inevitable, according to Dr. Metzer.  It basically boils down to this. A product bought at Company A should be equivalent to a product bought at Company B.  The label should say, in clear language, what the consumer is getting and what the expected effects will be. Currently, there is a lot of guesswork involved in comparing two or more products.

The problem with edibles and regulation is that the labeling system is meaningless to the average consumer and just plainly ignored like white noise by the first time user.  I mean, what’s the difference between 10 grams and 250 grams inside an edible cookie? After all, everyone knows how to eat a cookie! And that translation of “How will this affect me?” into “I can’t do over “this” much,” is what inherently makes cannabis edibles and other food-imitating products dangerous.  Currently, companies are required to list the amount of THC in their product.  This information is meaningless if you don’t know your own personal tolerance levels. More research is necessary to get to the bottom of this issue.

Theoretically, improving the labeling system, and the number of overdoses will lower.  Now try organizing the many businessmen scampering to open up a cannabis business of some type, and organize a rating system that works.

Before a truly effective law can be placed on the ballot, an understanding of the effects of THC and TCB, a few of the active ingredients in cannabis, need to be obtained.  Could a simple swab of cheek cells and saliva be the next step to gaining this understanding?

The MelixGX Company is a DNA testing facility that claims that inside your DNA is the description of your high, and all they need are four samples to tell.  That inside your DNA are the signs that will tell their genetic engineers what types and amounts of cannabis would be effective on you to solve many problems including stress, anxiety, pain management and sleep disorders.

Some gathered questioned the true intentions of the company as DNA stands as the next frontier of science.  After all, your DNA can tell so much about a person and should be protected like your identity or your fingerprints.  The extrapolated thought is that if they can tell what kind of chemicals can affect me, why can’t they find out other things about me?  Could this information be used for nefarious purposes? Are they being compiled and sold later like our phone numbers are sold to creditors, scam artist and worse?

Stu Campbell, a representative of MelixGX, insists that only 35 of the millions of DNA markers are examined during their analysis, and the four separate Q-tips used are just in case one or more of the samples gets contaminated.  The rest of the information, including reject, unused or contaminated samples are destroyed.

*Founded in 1985 by the late Lu Vason, The Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo has traveled to many cities and is known as the world’s only touring African American rodeo. The rodeo employs men and women of all ages, not only as rodeo participants, but as animal handlers, stable hands, cooks, and a large variety of administrative tasks.

Student workers often obtain scholarships for college and it is known throughout the youth that a good rodeo performance caught on tape could land them a full ride at one of the many historically black colleges and universities.  That means hard work can land them, not only fun, healthy habits, but there is a potential to set them on a positive path for success in life.

The Bill Pickett Rodeo website features not only information about their current champions, but also information on all the events and how black cowboys have affected the sport.

According to the website, “Annually, dust will fly as spectators cheer for their favorite Black Cowboys and Cowgirls competing during thrilling Calf Ropin’, exhilarating Bareback Ridin’, Bull Doggin, Ladies Barrel Racin’, Junior Barrel Racin’, Ladies Steer Undercoatin’, and gripping Bull Ridin.’”

The Bill Pickett Rodeo Series moves to Atlanta, GA on Saturday, August 4, 2018, at 7:30 pm and Sunday, August 5, 2018, at 3:30 pm at the Georgia International Horse Park.  Following that, the Bill Pickett Invitational Rodeo will be moving on to the DC-Virginia area with it’s ‘Rodeo for Kidz Sake’ on Friday, September 21, 2018, at 10:00 AM. The Bill Pickett Championship Rodeo will continue in the DC-Virginia area on Saturday, September 22, 2018, 1:30 pm & 7:30 pm at The Show Place Arena in Upper Marlboro, MD.

The Star of this year’s rodeo was this unnamed bull.  Aside from the flagrant flaunting of his personality, this bull possessed a white stripe along his nose, short horns, and glossy black fur.

One thing to remember, these animals, despite their great strength and fearsome looks, are peaceful beasts who don’t want to hurt anyone, but sometimes accidents happen.

Sometimes, like with the bull with the white stripe along his nose, the animals decide not to follow the traditional directions and show a bit of its own personality.

Here a cowboy ropes a stubborn bull.  This bull decided that he’d had his fun and peacefully returned to the stable with the other bulls.

When the same cowboy tried to lasso the bull with the white stripe, the bull turned toward the cowboy and faked a charge resulting in a quick retreat and dropping of the rope.

It should be noted that every time this particular cowboy twirled his lasso, it found its way around the neck of some loose animal, but the majority of the time, especially with the smaller animals and horses, they were ‘wrangled’ or guided into the stable adjacent the arena floor without the need of ropes, whips or any type of aggressive actions.

Surely this bull has a name, known by his trainers and owners, however before the EURWeb staff could get back to ask his name, he charged and bucked a trainer seriously injuring his leg.  The trainer will be ok, and paramedics were quick to respond after his wife and co-workers managed to secure the animal.

Playing with the animals, as this trainer learned, is not always advised, even though it is necessary to get the bull, and other animals, to do what is needed with the least amount of contact.  The animals are well trained and know where to go.

For information about the history of the rodeo, read EURWeb’s coverage of last year’s rodeo at https://www.eurweb.com/2017/08/the-history-of-the-rodeo-featuring-black-cowboy-bill-pickett/.

*The Microsoft Theater in downtown Los Angeles was the place to be on Friday, July 20, as The WhispersJeffrey Osborne, Peabo Bryson, Freddie Jackson and Howard Hewett swaggered into town billing themselves as the “Gentlemen of Soul.”

Howard Hewett started the evening off performing hits, which included Shalimar’s “A Night to Remember” and concluded his set with my favorite, “Say Amen.” His voice was as soothing as ever and he is still eye candy. Howard was a good choice to get the evening started.

Freddie Jackson was up next and although allowed only 30 minutes to perform hits from his extensive arsenal, his choices were excellent. “Jam Tonight” “Tasty Love” and “You are My Lady” are audience favorites, so he didn’t go wrong choosing to perform those songs. He also didn’t go wrong with his wardrobe choice either. I loved his silver shoes. LOL!

Peabo! Peabo! Peabo! OMG! He is still as fine as ever and his voice was crisp, clear and as strong as it was when he first burst onto the scene. He was stimulating on both the visual and auditory fronts. He performed hit after hit. The audience was treated to new music, which was the bomb. Peabo also threw in an acoustic guitar-playing rendition of Sade’s “King of Sorrow.” We loved it! Of course we heard some of the Peabo staples from back in the day, which sounded as good as ever. “I’m So Into You” and “Feel the Fire” were performed to perfection as were the other songs, which included “Tonight I Celebrate My Love for You,” a duet he recorded with Roberta Flack, whose part was very adequately performed by one of his background singers. Peabo knows how to put on a show. I was actually apprehensive for the performer having to follow him to the stage.

That performer would be Jeffrey Osborne, who came out swinging for the fence, hit a homer (with “Holding On”) and followed up by knocking every other song out of the park, so to speak. His motto throughout his set was, “Old school is the shit!” Let me just say right now that his entire old school performance, in which he followed “Holding On” with James Brown’s “Funky Good Time” was definitely the shit. He performed “Love Ballad,” “Concentrate on You,” “On the Wings of Love” and also paid homage to George Duke, the man who produced pretty much all of Jeffrey’s solo hits, by performing George’s megahit, “Reach.” To say it was well received would be the understatement of the evening. The audience ate it up. There was also a portion of the set, when Jeffrey’s bass player did a baseline challenge; he played just the baseline portion of the song and the song should be recognized by the audience. Yep, we recognized The O’Jay’s, “For the Love of Money” and Stevie Wonder’s “I Wish.” Jeffrey’s time on stage was high energy and high octane from the first song. I’ve never seen a 70 year old perform with as much enthusiasm. He even made a quip that he didn’t know what he was doing moving like that at his age. That’s okay Jeffrey, you can rest today.

A Jeffrey Osborne concert wouldn’t be complete without the “Woo Woo challenge.” He had a male from the audience that could Woo Woo Woo with the best of them. The female wasn’t bad either, but what else would you expect from Glodean White, wife of the late Barry White and one-third of the singing trio Love Unlimited. Jeffrey’s set also included a new song, “Worth it All.” It was vintage Jeffrey and folks need to check it out because it is hot. Jeffrey’s entire set was hot!

The final act of the evening was The Whispers. What can you say about the Whispers that have not already been said a thousand times during their more than 50 year illustrious music career? Their set began with a Soul Train video clip from several decades ago. Throughout the set, pictures were displayed of the Whispers through the years. Hearing, “Gotta Do Wrong” nearly five decades later, really magnified their longevity. The Whispers have way too many hits to perform in an evening shared with four other artists, so they performed key songs from their immense treasure chest. A Whispers concert is not a Whispers concert without hearing “Keep On Loving Me,” “Rock Steady” and “Say Yes,” all of which sounded pretty darn good. Although now nearly 75 years old, the Scott twins are still making it do what it do and at 69, Leavell Degree is as fit as a fiddle.

By now, folks should be able to tell that I had a ball watching the Gentlemen of Soul. In fact, I’m already looking forward to the next one; whenever it happens. If you never seen these gentlemen perform, you may want to consider it. I doubt that you would regret it.

*In today’s music industry, having talent isn’t enough and at the 31st Annual Long Beach Jazz Festival is proof of that fact.  With well over 10,000 in attendance over the three-day event, festival producer Kimberly Benoit and her staff, has put together a quality event that the whole family can enjoy.

Blankets, lawn chairs, a cot, and tents lined both sides and stretched around the Rainbow Lagoon as the sun mad tracks across the sky.

Benoit’s Health and Wellness Pavilion contained shaded seating, multiple food vendors including classic caterers Shabazz Foods, and newcomer the Grill.  Speakers covered everything from cooking to healing your relationships.

The second stage featured many up and coming artists including Sulpacio Jones and Ricky Jones, no relation, who both performed on Sunday.

If you are granted the ability to grace either of the stages adjacent to the Rainbow Lagoon in Long Beach California, you have the talent and that talent has been qualified by the staff of Rainbow Promotions.

What moves your performance into memory? What qualifies one performance over the next? This is an age-old concept that has many correct answers.  One of those correct answers is having a beautiful woman to stand next to you.  But is that beauty enough?

Friday brought out Maysa, a female singer who outshined all before her and proved that you don’t have to be popular to rock a crowd.  Unfortunately for Maysa, Jonathan Butler and his guitar made her vocals forgetful, moving from jazzy solo play to love ballads to up-tempo Rhythm and Blues grooves.  He was the exception to the rule, performing with a subdued band and keeping the focus on him, and of course, his guitars.

Saturday, featured several artists who looked to have guest singers grace the stage to pump up the energy of the set.  In the past, guest performances from the likes of Randy Crawford, Barbara Morison, Shanice Wilson, just to name a few, were all successful in making an already quality performance even more memorable for the host performer.

2018 brought the likes of Chante Moore,a veteran singer, known for soulful, melodic ballads, and newcomer Honey Larochelle, who looked to prove herself on the main stage for the first time.  Moore performed alongside Everette Harp and Doc Powell. Larochelle was brought onstage by Marcus Miller.

Both Moore and Larochelle brought their unique styles to the forefront and gave their all.  Moore’s star power along with her winning smile helped boost her performance even in the times when her songs seemed forced.

Larochelle, walking on stage with nothing to lose and everything to gain, brightened the stage in a yellow themed outfit that shined like the sun with energy.  Her vocals seemed flawless and came off effortless as she covered many of Marcus Miller’s songs and interacted with his already energetic style.

Ending the night with a standing ovation, Larochelle won the day, boosting Miller’s show both times she took the stage, the second bringing a roaring cheer from the crowd and placing a huge smile on her face.

Sunday continued the unofficial battle of the guitars, and even pianists joined in with Keiko Matsui donning a keytar and rocking a dance move! Matsui played five different kinds of keyboards including the keytar, and a Roger Trotman style vocal tube that used her voice as the tones for her keyboard.

Opening the day was newcomer Jazmin Ghent, whose petite frame was almost overwhelmed by the size of her black and gold saxophone, but she bent the keys backward as she played adjacent to Brian Simpson on the keyboard.

Closing the show was legendary guitarist Stanley Clark who is known for his fast fingers and showed off on both the bass guitar and the cello.  The battle for the top spot continued with Clarke going head to head with his entire band!

*Cedric The Entertainer celebrated 30 Years in Show Business surrounded by close family, friends, and fans as he received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored the comedian and actor on Thursday, July 19, with the well-deserved award for his work in entertainment.

Cedric the Entertainer expressed to EURweb how it felt to get his star on the walk of fame.

“On my star day, its official and it’s so great to be recognized. I’ve been doing this a long time, starting in stand-up then having the opportunity to go to television and film. Doing comedy in a little place in St Louis [and have it] take me all around the world to this moment where I got a star on the walk of fame is unique and a blessing.”

Celebrities on hand for the event included former cast mates Niecy Nash, Terri J. Vaughn, Michael Blackson, Comedian Rell and more.  Also in attendance was the cast of his New CBS show “The Neighborhood,” Max Greenfield, Hank Greenspan, Shawn McKinney, and  Marcel Spears.

Cedric’s friends and fellow Walk of Famers Magic Johnson and George Lopez helped to unveil the star with amazing speeches dedicated to Cedric.

EURweb correspondent Miss Conversation Piece got some quotes from those closest to Cedric to congratulate him on the award.

“Way before all the jokes, Ced and I went to college together so what I really saw in him was a good person.” -Eric Rhone, manager

It is an amazing feeling right now to see another brother that I grew up with doing stand-up get his name on a star. That just gave everybody hope, every comedian hope especially us black ones. Congratulations Cedric you have opened the doors for all of us. – Michael Blackson, Comedian

I would like to think of a word more than happy or congratulations and all that kinda stuff but I can think of nothing but I’m just tickled pink.  One of the things that I would like for you all to know is when Ced was growing up the kids in the neighborhood used to call him Hollywood so it’s come to fruition that they called him Hollywood now he is Hollywood. – Kittrell Kyles, Cedric’s Father

You know the one thing about Hollywood is that everybody comes from someplace else and you come here from Clark Gables to Marilyn Monroe to Michael Jackson to George Clooney and those doors are always closed at first. Your talent opens the doors. I look at myself as the unofficial mayor of Los Angeles and this man is deserving because I’ve never seen anyone that people embrace so much someone that they have never said a negative word about which is almost impossible in this industry and this time of social media. As an African American performer when you walk the streets of Hollywood Boulevard you look down and you see the people of color and they mean more to you because you know that it’s not easy to be on that sidewalk. I told him today take your wife and daughter to go there touch it and understand what it means. – George Lopez, Friend & Actor

I feel completely inspired seeing him get the star we are fortunate to be working with who we consider being two legends Tischina Arnold and Cedric the Entertainer. We’ve been watching since we were kids so watching him do this is a career path. Follow these stars right to him and follow in his footsteps and God willing this will happen.  –Sheaun McKinney, Cast member of ‘The Neighborhood’

It really makes it tangible seeing Ced get the star because I grew up watching him do what he does. Like he is brilliant and he is so generous and the fact that I get to work with him and I get to see this big milestone in his life its really inspiring and something I can hope to look forward to. – Marcel Spears, Cast member of the ‘The Neighborhood’

Be sure to check out Cedric the Entertainer’s latest work on CBS this fall premiering Oct 1, 2018, at 8pm.

*On Sunday September 2, 2018 TV One premieres an original movie “Dinner for Two” starring and executive produced by Grammy nominated Tristan Wilds (Red Tails) and Chaley Rose (“Nashville”) at 7 p.m. ET with encore to air at 10 p.m. The film is written and directed by Orlando Bishop and follows Chris (Wilds) as he deals with a break-up from someone he believes is his soul mate Angela (Rose).

The storyline, which Orlando said was taken from a personal experience of love lost, finds Chris using alcohol to diminish the pain of his lost. Fate however would give him a chance at one last dinner for two with her to only discover why he loved her in the first place.

“I lost my mom in March and wanted to get that feeling into a film,” Orlando said about the film that took 12 years to make.

“Dinner for Two” may have taken 12 years to make but it took only 12 days to shoot.

When I asked Wild and Rose what they would do if they where in the same situation as Chris and Angela Wild said, “The biggest thing…to allow yourself to grieve…get your feelings out…the good moments and bad moments they are lessons. Take a step back and see how I got to this place…be more reflective.”

Wise words for a man who has successful conquered the music industry as well as the acting arena. Tristan, in the music industry, is known as Mack Wilds. As a singer he garnered a Grammy nomination for the album “New York: A Love Story”. He recently signed with Roc Nation so expect big things from him musically. He debuted as an actor in a Spike Lee film project, “Miracle Boys”, followed by guest appearances on “Cold Case” and “Law & Order”. In a recurring role in HBO’s “The Wire” Tristan found the recognition he needed that led to a starring role beside Queen Latifah, Alicia Keys and Sakota Fanning in The Secret Life of Bees in 2007. He returned to television after that before obtaining a starring role in the George Lucas film Red Tails about the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African-American US Army Air Force pilots that also starred Cuba Gooding, Jr. and Terence Howard.

Chaley said she would go crazy if she lost a soul mate, “I think I would drink away my sorrow. Let myself cry…write it in my journal.”

Rose is known for her role in the ABC drama “Nashville.” She is also a singer. Her music can be found on the soundtracks of “The Music of Nashville: Seasons 2, 3 and 4” and “Christmas with Nashville.” Chaley also had a role in the CBS series “Code Black.”

The TV One original movie “Dinner for Two” airs Sunday September 2nd at 7 p.m. ET and is a complicated love story about love and sacrifice. www.TVOne.tv/show/dinner-for-two

Saxophonist Sam Rucker makes his sax sing on his third solo album “Redemption” (Favor Productions). His outstanding skills have allowed him to work with Peter White, Norman Connor and Phil Perry. He has opened up for Will Downing, Norman Brown, Eric Benet, Ben Tankard and Candi Staton to name a few.

*Flushing, NY – The Wakanda squad … just kidding … the Americans (including our honorary Asian-American) of color have shed several hopefuls during the first two rounds of play in Flushing. But those who remain are those whom most would expect to: the Williams sistersSloane StephensMadison Keys and Naomi Osaka.

To be fair to the fallen, its been rough out in these New York streets. Temperatures have soared to 100+ degrees on court causing unexpected upsets of top seeds (Simona Halep, Caroline Wozniacki, Andy Murray, Garbine Muguruza, etc), several early retirements, and spawning controversies that have reverberated around all of tennisdom and beyond.

As for the controversies, the USTA had to apologize for giving a female player a code violation warning for changing her shirt on court when she discovered it was on backwards, when the men can practically change their underwear out there without so much as a peep. In fact, the men have been known to elicit applause from the same actions. All feminist hell broke loose in the locker room and across social media.

Also, since the heat rule was in effect for both men and women (players get a 10-minute break between sets if the temperature reaches a certain point) a match between Andy Murray and Fernando Verdasco was suspended for the players to cool down, but during that period Verdasco was accused of strategizing with his coach. That’s a no no according to the rules. Andy Murray lost the match and made the incident “a thing” during his post match press conference, “I had to teach someone the f*cking rules,” he fumed.

Further, a player notorious for bobbing and weaving in and out of sanity during his matches, Nick Kyrgios, was allegedly given an unfair advantage by a chair umpire.  Mohamed Lahyani, an umpiring veteran, came down from his post and gave Nick an impromptu pep talk in between games when he thought he “wasn’t himself.” After the chat, Nick – who was first losing – turned things around and won the match. Many of the players have cried foul and are calling for Lahyani’s head on a platter.

So, the heat has folks going stone crazy … but there are some great things going down at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, too.

When the draw first came out, fans were up in arms about Venus and Serena being drawn on the same side of tournament. That meant one would have to eliminate the other before reaching the finals. The kicker, though, was how early that would occur – in the 3rd round. But, they had to get there first.

Venus was seeded 16th and Serena 17th, which made it possible that they could meet early. And tennis players player tennis players, irrespective of their relationship … sister, brother, mother, whatever. They’re the oldest in the draw, with Serena still trying to find her game after returning from giving birth and Venus still managing her Sjogren’s disease. Who knew if they’d even get out of the starting blocks? We’re dealing with the Williams Sisters, though, and obstacles are their motivation.

Long story short, they both did what they needed to do to set up another historic “sister 2 sister” duel. Tournament brass loves it, TV partners love it and the fans are over the moon about it.

Here’s how they did it:

Venus Williams was up first on Armstrong, taking on Camila Giorgi, a feisty Italian who’s as nimble as a field mouse and can hit blazing winners from anywhere on the court. But Venus is no chopped liver with power and movement … she’s just 38 and it was 900 degrees out there. So, it was anybody’s match.

But Venus didn’t win seven Grand Slams on just looks. She knows how to play the game and use her strengths to expose her opponents’ weaknesses, which she did with Giorgi. She shuffled around the court most of the match as if she were gonna fall over dead … until just that right time to pounce. She was expert at conserving her energy and only came alive when she felt like she could win the games needed to win each set and it worked brilliantly. She closed the match in 2 sets, 6-4, 7-5.

She did her part; it was time for Serena to do hers.

Serena Williams hasn’t won the US Open since 2014, but she’s won it six times, making her the reigning queen of New York. So, any match she plays is gonna be on center court, inside Arthur Ashe stadium, and likely at night. That was the case on Wednesday and her opponent was Carina Withtoft (GER). According to the commentators, her opponent was “just as big and strong” as she was, BUT she didn’t have the tennis pedigree of the 23-time Grand Slam champion. Sure, Serena is still a little rusty, but she didn’t make it look that way, smothering the German out, 6-2, 6-2 in a lavender tutu. Her serves were firing, her ground game was sound and her roar was mighty during the victory.

Serena’s triumph set up yet another historic meeting between the legendary siblings.

It will be Venus and Serena’s 29th match against one another, 17 years after playing the first professional match to ever be broadcast live during prime time, men or women. And this forthcoming meeting is being featured during the 50th anniversary of the US Open. It’s milestone after milestone, after milestone for the two, which is not lost on the USTA or the fans.

“It’s early in the tournament, so both of us are going to be looking forward to continuing to play better,” Venus said of the upcoming match. “The last time we played there was an unfair advantage, it was two against one [laughs].”

Sloane Stephens, the girl with the target on her back this year (defending champion), also won her round two match on Ashe during Wednesday’s day session. She faced Ukranian, Anhelina Kalinina.

Sloane’s quest to defend her title made her a little weak in the knees to start the match and Kalinina initially took advantage. The Ukranian won the first set, then the two engaged in a dog fight. The American came to life and was determine not to go down in flames in the second. Sloane is a great defensive player and when her back is against the wall she knows how to defend her way out of it. She defended her way to the US Open title last year, so it’s never over with her until the big-boned lady sings.

After the defend champion took the second set just by a nose, she took advantage of the 10-minute heat rule to get her mind – and her stomach right. She ate a few Sushi rolls during play suspension then came out firing on all cylinders. Kalinini wilted and Sloane closed out the third set and the match, 6-4, 5-7, 2-6.

Her next opponent is Victoria Azarenka of Belarus.

Madison Keys got it done in straight sets over over fellow American Bernarda Pera, on Armstrong while Taylor Townsend and Frances Tiafoe were fighting for their tennis lives. She struggled a bit in the first set, trading lengthy service holds, but she finally squeaked by her tenacious opponent, 6-4. Once she got that first set under her belt, the nerves subsided and the free swinging commenced. Madison sailed to a final scoreline of 6-4, 6-1 and moved on to face diminutive Serbian, Aleksandra Krunic, in the third round.

Naomi Osaka also came out with her guns ablazing and easily blasted Julia Glushko of Israel off the court. The final score was 6-2,-6-0, a beatdown born in Japan, but made in New York.

Taylor Townsend bowed out of singles play on Thursday night. She was taken out by Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, a former French Open champion, on a packed outside court. Her credentials don’t hold a candle to the feisty 10th seed, but she earned some valuable stripes during the defeat. She took the first set in a dazzling display of steadiness and defense turned to offense, lost the second, but found the nerve to come back from a break down and almost take the decider. It wasn’t until the critical ninth game in the third that she dropped her serve and allowed Ostapenko to go up 5-4 and serve it out 6-4, 3-6, 4-6. She fought a great fight, but just couldn’t make it over the hump.

Frances Tiafoe was also overcome by his opponent, Alex De Minaur of Australia. Tiafoe was never really in the match to begin with, dropping the first two sets 4-6, 0-6, but found the temporary will to earn him the third, 7-5. The surge wouldn’t last, however, as he was broken straight out of the gate in the fourth and never recovered. De Minaur proved too much to handle – he was like a human backboard – and took the match 6-4, 6-0, 5-7, 6-2. It was Tiafoe’s first 2nd round appearance.

So, the usual suspects remain, the Williams Sisters, Sloane Stephens, Madison Keys and newcomer Naomi Osaka (with an asterisks) to “colorfully” represent the USA. All are fully capable of being left standing with the trophy in the end, so if you’re into betting …

The Williams sisters showdown will air on ESPN tonight (8/31) at 7pm EST.

*Traci Braxton has opened up about the future of “Braxton Family Values” and why Phaedra Parks joined the hit reality series this season.

She told ESSENCE that she asked the former “Real Housewives of Atlanta” star to join her on an adventure to Wyoming and South Dakota to learn about the history of Black cowboys.

The duo also herd cattle and live like cowboys with former rapper Flava Flav, Tiffany “New York” Pollard, and comedian Kym Whitley, according to the report.

Braxton said the trip came about after she and her sisters had a fallout following reports that filming for BFV had come to a halt as the family refused to return until they renegotiated their contracts.

“I was down in the dumps with my sisters…and it was one of my business ventures, my Black Cowboy Whiskey,” she said, referencing the whiskey brand where she’s a brand ambassador. “And I wanted to reenact being on a ranch with black cowboys.”

Parks told ESSENCE during a recent press junket that the two were “herding 1500 heifers for over 100 miles.”

“[We were] by ourselves, camping out, really learning about how cowboys survived. Learning about Stage Coach Mary, who was one of the only African-American women who participated in cattle herding, so it was really good. It was really good. I loved it,” she added.

To help kick the blues, Braxton planned a girls trip to the spa with Parks, reality star Natalie Nunn, and comedian Luenell.

“It reminded me of my sisters. It was nothing but girls there and it reminded me of my sisters because we got to laugh with each other and cry with each other,” she recalled.

Fans will get to see Parks and Braxton’s great cowboy adventures in the show’s seventh season as well as deets on sister Toni’s wedding to Birdman.

Traci told ESSENCE that “Toni had to put it on hold for a little bit because she’s in a movie, a new movie — her and Towanda — so Toni was like, ‘Okay. I just gotta do this movie.’”

*Although Aretha Franklin sang at his inauguration, former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama won’t attend her funeral on Friday, their spokeswoman Katie Hill confirmed.

“Unfortunately, President and Mrs. Obama will not be able to attend Aretha Franklin’s services on Friday, but they have sent a letter, which the Rev. Al Sharpton will be reading during the service,” Hill said.

According to USA Today, Obama is to give a eulogy along with former President George W. Bush Saturday morning at the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., for the late U.S. Sen. John McCain, who died Aug. 25. Bush, the Free Press previously reported, also sent a letter to be read at Franklin’s funeral service.

Thousands lined up at a Detroit museum this week to honor Franklin, as the music icon’s open casket was on public display at the Charles H. Wright Museum of African-American History… check out the clip above.

Former President Bill Clinton will be among the speakers at Franklin’s funeral, as will former Attorney General Eric Holder.

The Obamas issued a statement following Franklin’s Aug. 16 death from pancreatic cancer.

“America has no royalty. But we do have a chance to earn something more enduring. Born in Memphis and raised in Detroit, Aretha Franklin grew up performing gospel songs in her father’s congregation. For more than six decades since, every time she sang, we were all graced with a glimpse of the divine,” it read.

“Through her compositions and unmatched musicianship, Aretha helped define the American experience. In her voice, we could feel our history, all of it and in every shade— our power and our pain, our darkness and our light, our quest for redemption and our hard-won respect. She helped us feel more connected to each other, more hopeful, more human. And sometimes she helped us just forget about everything else and dance.
”

“Aretha may have passed on to a better place, but the gift of her music remains to inspire us all. May the Queen of Soul rest in eternal peace. Michelle and I send our prayers and warmest sympathies to her family and all those moved by her song.”

The White House has not responded about whether Donald Trump or First Lady Melania Trump will attend Franklin’s farewell memorial service Friday, Aug. 31.

Bounce and Brown Sugar will partner with Bounce’s local Detroit affiliate, WXYZ-TV, for the special event, airing live and streaming WXYZ’s hometown coverage and commentary nationwide.

On the day she died, Trump told reporters: “I want to begin today by expressing my condolences to the family of a person I knew well. She worked for me on numerous occasions. She was terrific — Aretha Franklin — on her passing. She’s brought joy to millions of lives and her extraordinary legacy will thrive and inspire many generations to come. She was given a great gift from God — her voice, and she used it well. People loved Aretha. She was a special woman. So just want to pass on my warmest best wishes and sympathies to her family.”

*Lauryn Hill keeps a relatively low profile and rarely does interviews and the only time she makes headlines these days is when she’s several hours late for a live show.

But Ms. Hill had time on Monday to set the record straight about recent claims made against her by a former member of her band, Robert Glasper.

Glasper dished about the drama during an interview on The Madd Hatta Morning Show on 97.9 in Houston on Aug. 13, claiming Hill “stole music” for her acclaimed album “The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill” and that she mistreated her band and can’t even tune a guitar.

Peep the full interview below, he speaks about Hill around the 27-minute mark.

OTHER NEWS YOU MIGHT HAVE MISSED: Gov. Jerry Brown (California) Signs Bill Overhauling Bail System: Fair Treatment for Rich or Poor

As noted by Hip Hollywood, Hill was not having it though and penned an essay adressing his shady comments.

“I chose to wait until after the anniversary to post this,” she said in a message on Twitter. “Thank you everyone for the Love! I’d like to clear a few things up. -MLH”

She also posted a link to the essay published on Medium.com, read it here.

In it, she rejects the claim that she did not write the songs on “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.” You may recall back in 2001, she settled a lawsuit with former collaborators over writing credits on the 1998 album.

“You may be able to make suggestions, but you can’t write FOR me. I am the architect of my creative expression,” she writes. She also dismissed the rumor that she’s not allowed to play the original versions of her songs, stating that she chooses to remix her songs “because I haven’t released an album in several years.”

She also responded to allegations that she mistreats her band, writing: “When you’re a popular artist or public figure, people can sometimes forget that you’re hiring them to perform a service, and that you’re not the one there to entertain THEM. I didn’t scream or yell. Maybe I didn’t provide the experience that a musician may have wanted or expected during that time, but I was straight-forward, direct, and about the business at hand.”

On the rumor that she required others not to look her in the eye, Hill says, “yes, [being addressed as] Ms. Hill was absolutely a requirement. I was young, Black and female.” To Glasper’s claim that other musicians like Stevie Wonder and Quincy Jones have achieved more than her but demanded less of their coworkers, Hill writes, “I adore Stevie, and honor Herbie and Quincy, who are our forebears, but they’re not women.”

Glasper worked with Hill back in 2008 also claimed she hadn’t “done enough to be so arrogant.”

L-Boogie fired back with: “Who are you to say I didn’t do enough?” she says. “Most people are probably just hearing your name for the first time because you dropped MINE in an interview, controversially. Taking nothing away from your talent, but this is a fact.”

Adding, “The Miseducation was my only solo studio album, but it certainly wasn’t the only good thing I did. I was also a member of the Fugees, another groundbreaking, multi-platinum selling group, who bridged social and cultural gaps, and were ambassadors of hip-hop all around this planet. We laid important groundwork upon which an entire generation of artists and musicians still stand. We broke through conventions and challenged limited world views every time we played.”

Glasper had not responded to Hill’s essay when this story was published.

*TLC’s former manager Perri “Pebbles” Reid filed a defamation lawsuit against Viacom in 2014, claiming VH1’s 2013 TLC biopic “CrazySexyCool” portrayed her as a “conniving and dishonest businesswoman” who exploited the group for her own personal gain.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the case was set to go to trial September 24, but now is closed, as both parties have reached a settlement in the $40 million defamation case.

The exact terms of the settlement were not revealed.

As noted by The Muse, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozanda “Chilli” Thomas cooperated with the filmmakers in the dramatized portrayal of their rise to fame; this helped convince the judge of the possibility of bias, as alleged by Pebbles’s complaint.

Viacom attempted to get the case dismissed but the court did allow the former singer to sue over “scenes where she was shown pressuring the group’s members to sign contracts without sufficient time, for scenes showing Reid exerting control over lawyers for the group’s members, for scenes that conveyed the idea that Reid improperly deducted expenses and only paid TLC $25 a week, and for a scene conveying that it was Reid’s decision to remove Chilli from TLC,” according to THR.

TLC was formed by Pebbles in 1991, and details of their deal with her production company, Pebbitone, were detailed in an episode of VH1’s “Behind the Music,” which alleged that the group owed the label approximately $500,000 when it filed for bankruptcy in 1995.

“The deal that we signed with Pebbles, it wasn’t a good or a bad deal,” Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes explained in the doc. “It’s the type of deal that new artists get. The bad thing about the deal was that Pebbles had us signed to so many deals. She just had her fingers in the pot all across the board.”

In a 2013 interview on The Wendy Williams Show, Pebbles was asked if she made TLC buy their name back from her for $1 million per letter, she refused to go into detail, citing a confidentiality agreement, but stated: “It was my name, not theirs. I created that name.”

*Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul’s home going service can best be described as a combination of a revival, political rally, motivational talk, musical tributes, roast and of course worship. Presenters from the world of entertainment, sports, politics, business, and just friends came together on one stage to celebrate not only Franklin’s musical talents but her activism and the many lives she touched.

Franklin died Aug. 16 of pancreatic cancer at the age of 76.

The service held at Greater Grace Temple was presided over by Bishop Charles H. Ellis, 111 who is also a long time family friend. Lining the street to the Church on Seven Mile road was a sea of over 100 Pink Cadillacs. Ellis and his wife Crisette Ellis thought up the idea. The cars arrived post arrival of Franklin, but as the funeral procession left for the cemetery they were four deep. Cristine Ellis is national sales for Mary Kay Cosmetic. So she didn’t have to go far to find owners of Pink Cadillacs. The company uses pink colored Cadillacs as a sales incentive for reaching what it calls “Grand Achiever” level of sales.

They came from across the nation suited in their signature outfits. They even had a special section in the Church. But there was some vintage Cadillacs on display. Bringing your car meant you would get entrance into the funeral.

The day kicked-off with the fourth and final viewing of the week which was held between 8:30-9:30AM – Two days of public at The Charles H. Wright Museum on Tuesday and Wednesday followed by another public viewing on Thursday at New Bethel Church. The Queen had clothing change for each of these viewing. For this final viewing she wore a gold lame dress and her gold Christian Louboutine Shoes – the red soles. Ever a signature of a Diva. Everything from the arrangement of the flowers that surround the 24 karat gold plated casket, which was similar to the one of Michael Jackson and James Brown, to the arrangements of the pastel colored roses that surround the casket was flawless.

In the foyer of the church attendees had the chance to see to floral arrangements sent by stars from around the World. The Miracles and The Four Tops arrangement was very dramatic, Mariah Carey’s White Roses formed into a cross was much photographed. Rod Steward, Elton John, Barbara Streisand, and Jimmy Fallon are just a few of the major stars from around the world who sent flowers. Oddly enough the arrangement sent on behalf of Diana Ross was more suitable as a tabletop. Franklin’s casket was surrounded by pastel roses and a Bleeding Heart from her grandchildren.

The program was to scheduled to start at 10AM but the family procession didn’t get going until 11:30AM. I clocked out the recessional at 7:15PM. The expression time flies when you are having fun or in this case inspired, uplifted and entertained.

The family and friends procession officially kicked off the service. Also leading the processional were funeral directors from around the country. This was a special touch organized by the Swanson Funeral Home. The program organized by the Franklin Family will be remembered as historic and talked about as the standard for a celebrity funeral. Gwen Quinn was the publicist for the family and knew how to draw media from around the globe.

Highlights

Bishop T.D. Jakes (Potter’s House) was one of several pastors from across the country who knew Aretha Franklin or her Father C.L. Franklin. He read passages from the Bible. Jakes was one of the few members of the clergy that stuck to his allotted time. His eloquent reading from the Old Testament set the tone for what was ahead. He said, “She was classy enough to sing on the most prominent stages in the world, but she was home girl enough to make potato salad and fry some chicken. In a class all by herself.”

Faith Hill whose rendition of “What A Friend We Have In Jesus” was panned by some, but one singer who also performed said the sound system may have been off.

Local, state and national politicians told stories of how Franklin, a Detroit native, was a national treasure. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan said that he will send a bill to city council to rename Chene Park, which he said was one of her favorite places in the world, to be renamed Aretha Franklin Park. It seems Council President Brenda Jones also had the same idea and was introducing a resolution also changing the name permanently. She also announced that a portion of a city street is going to be renamed Aretha Franklin Way.

Rep. Brenda Lawrence (D-Mich.) talked about how she received a surprise phone call from Franklin after becoming mayor of Southfield, Mich. This was Franklin’s style. Franklin wanted Lawrence to attend an upcoming event so she picked up the phone and called her. Lawrence was in shock and responded, “No, excuse me, ma’am, you mean Aretha Franklin, like the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin?” She said Franklin was very supportive of women politicians. Lawrence is part of a group of lawmakers, including Sen. Kamala D. Harris (D-Calif.), who introduced legislation to award Franklin posthumously with a Congressional Gold Medal, one of the highest civilian honors.

Also attending the event was Sheila Jackson Lee and Maxine Waters who got numerous applause.

The cast of Tyler Perry’s “The Haves and The Have Nots got a standing ovation just for walking into the sanctuary. Perry said the show was Franklin’s favorite. The cast attended The People’s Tribute to the Queen the previous night and had fans going selfie crazy. They had front row seats at the funeral. Perry was also one of the speakers.

Ariana Grande had the twitter world working overtimes because of her attire. But one woman said “she was dressed like most young women of her generation.” She had her fiancé Pete Davidson in tow. It was reported that her old flame Big Sean was also in the house. She performed “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” After her musical tribute, Bishop Ellis embraced her and remarked that he thought an Ariana Grande was a new item on the Taco Bell menu. Her fans didn’t see the joke. He also had to issue and apology for this and in an interview with The Associated Press at the cemetery where Franklin was interred late Friday about touching her.

“It would never be my intention to touch any woman’s breast. … I don’t know I guess I put my arm around her,” Ellis said. “Maybe I crossed the border, maybe I was too friendly or familiar but again, I apologize.”

He said he hugged all the performers during Friday’s eight-hour service.

“I hugged all the female artists and the male artists,” Ellis said. “Everybody that was up, I shook their hands and hugged them. That’s what we are all about in the church. We are all about love.”

The Clark Sisters from Detroit brought the program back to its gospel roots. Their rich harmonies on the song “Is My Living In Vain” had the church on their feet.

Vanessa Bell Armstrong and the Williams Brothers, another Detroit group, gave the audience old school gospel.

Aretha Franklin’s grandchildren and nieces, Vaughn, Victorie, Jordan and Cristal Franklin was a reminder to all that she was not just an entertainer, but a mother, sister, grandmother and aunt. While she had a very public musical life, her personal life was off limits. The next generation of the Franklins talked about what it meant to have Franklin as a Grandmother and aunt. In the words of Victorie, “she was just my grandma.”

Former president, George W. Bush who honored Aretha with a Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2005, sent a letter on behalf of himself and his wife that was read during the acknowledgments and condolences.

Going off the printed program schedule, Smokey Robinson looked GQ handsome and 30 years younger. He didn’t perform, but crooned a few bars from a song he wrote for another production. Robinson said in one of their last conversations, Franklin told him about the movie that’s in development about her life and asked who he thought should play him. He didn’t reveakl what he may have told Aretha, however, Robinson said: “I know you’re up there and you’re celebrating with your family, and all our neighborhood friends who have gone, and you’re going to be one of the featured voices in the choir of angels, because you’d have to be.”

A operatic presentation by Alice Mcallister Tillman singing “Ave Maria” was a reminder that Queen of Soul could sing any kind of music. Over and over through the program speaker mention her versatility and the fact that she was in a league of her own.

Eric Holder, former U.S. Attorney General talked about how he first met Aretha – like many – she just called him on the phone. This was her style to call public figures to complement them on their accomplishment. Many becoming lifelong friends. To cap his presentation he choose Aretha Franklin’s “Until You Come Back To Me (That What I’m Gonna do).”

Franklin’s son Edward Franklin who sometime performed with her was another family member who made a presentation. His vocal choice was Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me.”

Pastor Shirley Caesar in a silver lame evening gown dazzled the audience and had them dancing on the stage, in the pews and aisle. It was old school revival. She performed with Tasha Cobbs-Leonard. She even had Minister Louis Farrakhan who was seated on the podium swaying to praises. He stayed for the entire program on stage but did not make presentation.

Celebrity Judge – who is a real retired Judge – Greg Mathis told the audience of how his relationship with the Queen of Soul started with his political activism working with Rev. Jesse Jackson.

Reverend Al Sharpton read a letter on behalf of the former President Barrack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama. He also talked about Franklin’s generosity to his organization. He said she once sent him a check to help his organization. He called to thank her and told Franklin that he had framed the check. Franklin replied: “don’t you have a photo copy machine because you need to cash that check.” Sharpton mentioned how he misspelled “respect” while discussing Franklin on his TV show. Fans called him out about this error. He said that he needed to “correct President Trump and teach him what it means. “Trump said, ‘She used to work for me,’” Sharpton explained. “No, she used to perform for you. She worked for us.”

Chaka Khan who flew in Oprah Winfrey’s former hair and makeup artist Reggie Wells brought the house down with the gospel song “How I Got over.” In a slinky black sheath with a large taffeta duster she looked stunning with a fan for special effects. She gave the audience all the drama of a seasoned Diva. She came back for an encore. The only performer on the program to do so.

Ron Isley remarked he should have brought his brothers and the band His musical tribute was his “Eye Is On The Sparrow.” He grew up with Franklin and you could hear the sorrow in his voice.

Rev Jesse Jackson, founder/president of Rainbow Push Coalition was one of many from the clergy who used their tribute as a call to action to get people to vote. He said that we stand in line for a viewing but can’t stand in line to vote. Former President Bill Clinton along with his wife Hillary Clinton had the audience in stitches with his rememberance of the Queen of Soul.

“I was so happy when I got here and the casket was still open, I got to think: ‘I wonder what my friend has on today’.”

He added “You could say that Hillary and I went to college and law school with Aretha,” Clinton said at the time, “because there was scarcely a day when we didn’t listen to one of her songs.”

Clinton ended his remarks by holding his cellphone, playing Franklin’s “Think” up to the microphone.

The two “American Idol” alumni were both looking slim and trim held their own in the musical tributes. Fantasia Barrino-Taylor looked stunning in a black Sheath with a bolero jacket topped off with a fascinator hat. She sang “You’ve Got A Friend.” Jennifer Hudson also looking slim and wore a peplum jacket over a pencil slim skirt. She also sported a fascinator. Her musical tribute was “Amazing Grace.” Both performed in the latter part of the day but brought it on strong.

Cicely Tyson’s hat was a speech in itself. The 91-year-old actress read a version of Paul Laurence Dunbar’s “When Malindy Sings,” subbing Aretha for Malindy. She still got it.

Clive Davis, Chief Creative Officer, Sony Music talked about his 30 year musical relationship with Franklin. He also shined a light on her activism quoting her as saying “I have the money. I get it from black people and I want to use it in ways that will always help our people.’ He is planning a tribute this fall to Franklin.

Bishop Paul Morton and Yolanda Adams took the traditioaln spiritual “Mary Don’t You Weep” to a whole new level for me and had the stage stomping like a drill team in high gear. Adams says she is working on a new album.

Former NBA player and NBA broadcaster Isiah Thomas (Detroit Pistons) says he became friends with Franklin when he played in Detroit. He also reflected on how he was introduced to Franklin’s music by his mother. He said that depending on what song his mother was playing told him what was going on with his mother and father’s relationship.

Tyler Perry shared the same scenario about how Franklin music was the music of his youth.

Michael Eric Dyson, professor of sociology, Georgetown University came to the podium fired up and said The Queen Of Soul is the Queen of Our Soul, He summed up the event as the most spiritual expression of Blackness.

Gladys Knight another singer who has slimmed down sung “You’ll never Walk Alone.” She was one of the few who didn’t use the Aretha Franklin Choir or Orchestra to back-up her singing.

The Rev. Jasper Williams Jr., a pastor from Atlanta’s Salem Baptist Church delivered the eulogy and talked about Aretha Franklin’s activism being an issue with her father. Franklin paid to get Angela Davis out of Jail. He said Aretha told her Father that Davis was a woman and didn’t need to be in jail.

But Williams who is known as a pastor’s pastor devoted a lot of time talking about black parenting and “black on black” crime.

Stevie Wonder stood playing a harmonica solo. While his address was about praising Franklin’s music uplifting people, he also commented on Williams’ statement regarding Black Lives Matter. He said that Black lives do matter and he is committed to making this world a better place.

“We can talk about all the things that are wrong, and there are many,” Wonder said. “But the only thing that can deliver us is love.”

His musical tribute was “As” from his 1976 album “Songs in the Key of Life.” They many not have been gospel music but the church rocked. His back ups … Jenifer Lewis, Dottie Peoples and Angie Stone learned that afternoon they would accompany Stevie.

Jennifer Holliday in a bright purple suite with rhinestones’ with the Aretha Franklin Celebration Choir closed out the ceremony with a performance of “Climbing Higher Mountains.”

This service will be talked about years later and the event of the century.

*It’s time for some more apologizing that includes Ariana Grande … again. But this time, it’s from the bishop who officiated Aretha franklin’s funeral. Bishop Charles H. Ellis III has apologized Friday to the singer for how he touched her onstage and a joke he made about her name.

If you was watching, you saw the bishop awkwardly greet Grande on stage after she performed “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman.” Images of the moment showed Ellis’ hand holding Grande well above her waist, with his fingers pressing against one side of her chest.

He apologized in an interview with The Associated Press at the cemetery where Franklin was interred late Friday.

“I hug all the female artists and the male artists,” Ellis said. “Everybody that was up, I shook their hands and hugged them. That’s what we are all about in the church. We are all about love.”

“The last thing I want to do is to be a distraction to this day. This is all about Aretha Franklin,” the preacher added

Many people posted close-up images of the moment on Twitter, tagging it #RespectAriana.

Ellis also apologized to Grande, her fans and Hispanic community for making a joke about seeing her name on the program and thinking it was a new item on the Taco Bell menu.

“I personally and sincerely apologize to Ariana and to her fans and to the whole Hispanic community,” Ellis said. “When you’re doing a program for nine hours you try to keep it lively, you try to insert some jokes here and there.”

Ellis’ touching of Grande overshadowed some criticism earlier in the ceremony concerning the short dress Grande wore for her performance. Numerous people posted criticisms online that the dress was too short for church.

“#ArianaGrande don’t know the below the knee rule for the pulpit in the black church. Somebody hand her a lap hanky and a choir robe. Bless her heart,” tweeted one, Tenisha Taylor Bell.

*It was incorrectly reported by several media outlets that Gladys Knight has the same kind of cancer that Aretha Franklin succumbed to, pancreatic cancer. However, the singer’s spokesperson set the record straight with a statement to the Detroit Free Press.

“She’s healthy. Someone must have misinterpreted,” said Javier Delgado, a publicist with JDS PR, which represents the onetime Motown star.

The issue regarding Knight’s health started trending online after the 74-year-old singer spoke to reporters about Franklin before entering Detroit’s Greater Grace Temple for Friday’s funeral.

Knight talked about the last time she had spoken to her “sister” Franklin while staying at the same hotel:

“So we got to talking and everything, and at that time we shared the fact that we had the same disease,” said Knight. She did not elaborate and that’s what started the speculation. This is another instance that shows how words matter.

RELATED: ARETHA FRANKLIN’S HOME GOING SERVICES ON EURWEB – WATCH AGAIN NOW

Later, Knight’s publicist, Jay Schwartz, put out a statement from Knight explaining the earlier comment.

“I’d like to clarify that Aretha and I discussed both of us having cancer, mine was stage 1 breast cancer and hers was pancreatic. Due to early detection, I am cancer free and grateful for that. It is unfortunate that on a day we should be celebrating Aretha’s life and massive contribution to our world, a reporter who did not relay accurate information has missed the message. I send my love to the entire Franklin family and my gratitude to them for sharing such an extraordinary person with us.”

USA Today notes that Knight was an unannounced addition to the funeral proceedings, and performed two songs near the end of the services: “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
